MARCY PLAYGROUND ‘INDABA REMIXES FROM WONDERLAND’ TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 28 BY CAPITOL/EMI CD and Digital Album Features 13 Crowdsourced Remixes from Indaba MusicHollywood, California – August 25, 2010 – Marcy Playground are excited to announce the September 28 release of their forthcoming album Indaba Remixes from Wonderland by Capitol/EMI. Indaba Remixes from Wonderland is a new CD and digital collection of remixes from the band’s 2009 critically-acclaimed album Leaving Wonderland…In a Fit of Rage. For the release, the band partnered last fall with the top online destination for music creation, Indaba Music, to offer fans the opportunity to put their own stamp on Marcy Playground’s songs by remixing them. The band then selected their favorite mixes, from hundreds submitted, for inclusion on this special release.
Marcy Playground frontman John Wozniak comments: “I wanted to make this record to show people what the online music community is capable of. I believe the talent reflected in these tracks speaks for itself. This community is thriving. It’s thriving because musicians feed on inspiration they get from other musicians. Music is not meant to be a solitary endeavour. It’s something we like to do with other people. But maybe you live in a remote part of the world, or have problems with mobility because you’re physically disabled, or have severe social anxiety, or simply can’t find other musicians in your locale who share your musical interests. Indaba side-steps these limitations, giving musicians all over the world a way to get together and create anyway, which is revolutionary. “Indaba Remixes from Wonderland marks the first time that an entire album has been produced exclusively using crowdsourced remixes from IndabaMusic.com’s worldwide community in which the winners will receive royalties from album sales. The mixes were judged by the band, with the prize being the opportunity to have the winning entries included on the album.“Marcy Playground was very forward-thinking in the planning for Indaba Remixes from Wonderland. Their faith in the independent music community’s ability to deliver was well founded, as evidenced by the overwhelming response,” said Mantis Evar, Co-founder and EVP, Artists & Community of IndabaMusic.com.Wozniak continues: “Before the contest started, most of us expected to see between 50 and 100 remix submissions, which is still a lot of music. But we underestimated. By the end, members of the community had submitted some 337 individual remixes, amounting to over 20 consecutive hours of music. Not only were we overwhelmed by the response, we were impressed by the multitude of musical directions and interpretations in different musical genres. It took a lot of time to judge the winners because every single submission deserved consideration, and multiple listens. I kept notebooks filled with observations in order to keep track of what I liked and what I didn’t. Eventually I whittled those 330 down to about 60 of the best remixes, and then took that list to the band. The guys helped trim those 60 down to 30. But then we had to get those 30 down to 13, and that was painful. Those 30 finalists were all outstanding. At the end of the day, everybody put so much love into their remixes, I’m just thankful to have had the opportunity to experience them all.”

”Marcy Playground shows they’re more than one-hit wonders” by Dave Paulson.
“Maybe they should have had a few more songs with “sex” in the title?
Marcy Playground’s 2009 effort, Leaving Wonderland … in a Fit of Rage, made the argument that there was no good reason for the New York trio to be relegated to alt-rock one-hit-wonderdom. If you thought lightning struck the group on their lone 1997 hit “Sex and Candy,” you might be surprised to find the same catchy simplicity fueling country-tinged head-bobbers such as “Devil Woman.” (Watch a live performance of that song after the jump.)
Marcy Playground’s latest tour brings them to 3rd & Lindsley (818 Third Ave. S., 259‑9891) on Sunday, August 15. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $10.

CD Review: Marcy Playground Is “Leaving Wonderland”
Marcy Playground hit it big in 1997 with the song “Sex & Candy” from their debut album. Since then, the band has tried to recapture that notoriety with minimal success. After their sophomore slump “Shapeshifter,” they released the album “MP3” in 2004. After some minor comeback success, Marcy Playground released “Leaving Wonderland…In A Fit Of Rage” in 2009.The album begins with the lead-off single “Blackbird.” Fans will be happy with the band’s sound as they stick close to their roots of success. The passion front-man John Wozniak has for this record is felt in the songs “Gin And Money” and “Emporer” containing some of the album’s most powerful vocals. The songs “Star Baby” and “I Must Have Been Dreaming” have a sweet, playfulness quality to them. The gentleness of “Irene” and “Good Times” are welcome additions to the band’s overall alternative sound. “Memphis,” originally released as a b-side, was resurrected for this album and is the strongest song on the album. The stripped down acoustic sound brings out the song’s wonderful lyrics.Marcy Playground will be performing at the Alive At Five in Stamford, CT on July 1st. Also fans can expect an album of “b-sides” and previously unreleased songs expanding through the band’s entire 13-year career to be released later this year. For a full list of tour dates and information, check out the band’s website www.marcyplayground.com.

NEW YORK – On July 7th, 2009 Marcy Playground made their highly anticipated comeback with their fourth studio album Leaving Wonderland…In A Fit Of Rage and felt the early love from radio programmers. This early success with strong tracks like “Blackbird”, “Devil Woman”, “Star Baby” and “Good Times” is paving the way for a well-seasoned rock band that’s back in 2010 with a new vibe and track list to match.
The group is scheduled to play at Spin Entertainment Complex in Florence June 25
In 1997 Marcy Playground dominated the airways and the charts with “Sex and Candy”, a hit that gave them much attention. After a five years hiatus, Marcy Playground’s sound has matured but still exerts John Wozniak’s quirky lyrics and catchy melodies. Marcy Playground has come a long way from “Sex and Candy” and can’t wait to share the music from Leaving Wonderland… In A Fit Of Rage.
A highly original and melodic modern rock band, Marcy Playground exploded onto the scene back in 1997 with the insanely irresistible hit single “Sex And Candy,” a song that notched [a then-record] fifteen consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard’s U.S. Modern Rock tracks chart and a self-titled debut album that went on to sell 1.7 million copies. Subsequent albums Shapeshifter (1999) and Marcy Playground 3 (”MP3”) (2004) showcased two periods of tremendous creative evolution for the group, and have gone on to enjoy something of “cult classic” status among the band’s many loyal fans.
On their riveting and keenly-anticipated fourth album, Leaving Wonderland… In A Fit Of Rage, Marcy Playground return to action in triumphant fashion. Armed with songs born of an intense and turbulent period in his life, Marcy Playground’s main man, singer/guitarist John Wozniak, has fashioned a record that digs deep, taking the listener on an exhilarating and satisfying emotional and musical rollercoaster ride. Its creator is justifiably proud of his accomplishment, stating “this is the most personal record I’ve ever made, and I think it’s the thing that will connect most with other people.”

Before Marcy Playground released “Sex and Candy” 1997, I didn’t know you could say “sex” on the radio, let along smell it or compare it to candy. The lethargic rhythm and the puzzlingly naughty lyrics about devious stares and disco lemonade were all so deliciously forbidden to me, a 12-year-old product of a conservative Christian household. 13 years later, Marcy Playground’s recent efforts (a full-length last year, a rarities disc to come later this year) will never match their 90s success, but that sedated song has stood the test of time. Anyone over 20 can imitate frontman (and Evergreen State College alum) John Wozniak’s sleepy purr of “I smell sex and cannn-dy, yeah.” And it’s probably still the laziest song to ever hit the Top 40. Marcy Playground plays at the Lost Horizon
By Mark Bialczak/The Post-Standard
May 19, 2010, 12:01AM
Photo by Tony NelsonComing to the Lost Horizon in Syracuse on Thursday is Marcy Playground: left to right, Slomie Lavie, Dylan Keefe and front man John Wozniak.
The rock trio Marcy Playground made its first noise outside of Manhattan in 1997, with a pop-friendly song by the name of “Sex and Candy.”
Radio loved the sound of frontman and guitarist John Wozniak, bass player Dylan Keefe and drummer Dan Reiser.
So they played it. And played it some more. And still played it.
The first single from the band’s self-titled debut album spent 15 straight weeks as No. 1 on the Billboard modern rock tracks chart.
Wonderful, Wozniak recalls during a phone interview Monday from his Toronto home.
“It gave us the opportunity to have a career that’s lasted this long,” says Wozniak, who sings with Marcy Playground on Thursday night at the Lost Horizon in Syracuse.
And, not so wonderful.
“Because it was so big, (Capitol Records’) radio promo guy Phil Costello said, ‘I can’t get them to stop playing this record, so we can get your next single on the radio.’ That song had legs. It kept going and going and going,” Wozniak says.
“The other singles never had a chance to blossom,” he says.
“St. Joe on the School Bus,” for example, “was like No. 12 on the charts,” Wozniak says. “Any other time, that would be considered a huge hit. After ‘Sex and Candy,’ it was considered a huge disappointment.”
Still Wozniak did things his own way for Marcy Playground’s second album, “Shapeshifter.”
“I wanted a rock album that was dark and moody,” he says. “The record company said, ‘Where’s the single?’ We said, ‘Pick one.’”
The Capitol connection ran its course when the label pulled its support in the midst of a tour that had Marcy Playground opening for Counting Crows.
“We said, ‘Give us our release.’ And they did,” Wozniak says.
The third CD, “MP3,” came out in 2004 in the indie label Reality Entertainment. And last year’s recording, “Leaving Wonderland … In a Fit of Rage,” was self-released on Woz Records.
The songs are melodic, compelling and very personal.
Wozniak wrote them to help himself shake depression.
“It was more than just a confessional,” he says. “It was totally therapeutic. I started writing and working on it when stuff in my life was out of control.”
He says he didn’t know he’d record the songs until after they all were written. And, he didn’t know he’d release the songs on an album until his wife talked him into it.
“She was instrumental in bringing me out of my funk,” he says. “She said, ‘Do it. Go for it.’ A lot of the record is about her, about a period where we broke up, and there was another girl involved. If it wasn’t embarrassing for her, it shouldn’t be for me, she said.
“She brought up a good point,” Wozniak says.
Now, with drummer Shlomi Lavie having replaced Reiser, the tour is a happy place.
“Shlomi’s great. He keeps us entertained,” Wozniak says. “The band has never sounded better. Dylan has never been as happy. We travel light. I love life that way. It’s fewer personalities. We get to have fun and do stuff.”
The band has been working hard since last year’s CD release.
They decided to post the 12 tracks on www.indabamusic.com and allow website members to download and remix the songs. Out of 320 submissions, they’ve selected a baker’s dozen — “‘Blackbird’ done twice,” he says — for release on an upcoming album he thinks will be titled “Leaving Wonderland All Mixed Up.”
There’s a live concert DVD recorded at Lee’s Palace in Toronto in the works. They’re also working on an album of rarities and B sides.
“And then also we’re writing more and more,” Wozniak said, “so there’s a new record coming sometime as well.”

Marcy Playground plays at the Lost Horizon
